A bit about the role

The Big Picture launched in New York over 6 years ago and has grown from strength to strength. We’re now looking for an experienced qualitative insight Director who’s passionate about design, commercially minded, and keen to play a leading role in the next stage of growth for our New York office.

Reporting to the Managing Director, NY, the successful candidate will lead the commercial & operational activities, be hands on in the delivery of project work, and lead the team day to day. 

Who we’re looking for…

  • Exceptional qualitative insight specialist with min. 10 years agency side experience
  • Extensive and recent experience in CPG, Pharma, Digital & Social Media Brands
  • Design research experience, ideally including: packaging, visual equity and brand identity, brand architecture, product design & experience, Innovation/NPD
  • A proven interest in brands and the role of design – an appreciation for how people relate to and respond to design.       
  • In depth knowledge of and experience across a range of face to face and online methodologies (focus groups, ethnography, IDIs, workshops etc.).  Some knowledge / experience of quantitative research is a definite bonus. 
  • A proven track record in account management, able to grow existing clients, identify and capitalise on new opportunities.  A confident and effective networker.
  • Proven business management skills, able to take on P&L responsibility in partnership with MD (NYC)
  • Excellent leadership skills, able to motivate, retain and inspire talent at every level, and get the best out of people so they progress in their careers and reach full potential.

Primary Purpose of this role:

  • Lead and grow the US arm of the business.
  • Drive the growth of the qualitative business, with responsibility for P&L (with MD)
  • Lead delivery of high quality qualitative and integrated global research projects
  • To oversee and develop New York talent

  • Evidence of leading qualitative insight and strategy projects – able to deliver to the highest standards at every stage of process from proposal to final report
  • Evidence of extensive CPG experience including in depth knowledge of how to apply insight to packaging, product, brand identity, comms and NPD challenges

Commercial: Growing business (sales and profit UK and US)

  • Evidence of delivery of profit (and sales), working to a commercial agenda.
  • Ideally evidence of achieving annual sales growth.
  • Evidence of influencing skills (tell compelling story) & networking comfort.

People: Attracting, retaining, training excellent and fully engaged team

  • Evidence of team building: mentoring and management success.
  • Ideally evidence of inspiring people to retain them.
  • Ideally evidence of strategic involvement in recruitment process.

  • Evidence of contributing to commercial strategy, ideally integrated/similar.
  • Ideally evidence of setting a new business function up within an agency.
