The Research Manager role…

2020 has been a challenging year for us all. We’re incredibly grateful to be in the fortunate position where demand for our services is a strong as ever. In fact, we’re even busier, so we’re looking to expand our team with a qualitative researcher to help ensure we continue to deliver high quality work to our clients, that has real impact.

Specifically, we’re looking for a Research Manager to join the team – someone who is already managing projects and teams, and has exposure to both UK and International research. Experience in design research is not essential, but a background in brand communication and strategic marketing is a definite advantage.

Team members in this role will be responsible for ensuring all aspects of project administration are completed, coordinating input to proposals and writing them, moderating a range of online and face-to-face/virtual sessions, undertaking analysis, building long-term client relationships, drafting debriefs and managing fieldwork suppliers.

Job Description

Research:

  • Takes the lead in writing proposals to the briefing and scope agreed. This includes collection of costings from suppliers, creating charts for the proposal, etc.
  • Uses experience and instinct to determine the best way of handling the project and any issues arising throughout.
  • Owns the project, overseeing completion of all administrative activities required to set-up both face-to-face and online projects.
  • Responsible for ensuring project is on-budget.
  • Liaises with the field agencies to ensure the right fieldwork participants are recruited (including signing off the screener).
  • Oversees drafting of the discussion guides for the fieldwork.
  • Manages international fieldwork set-up, working with oversees partners.
  • Ensures the correct stimulus package is delivered for research.
  • Moderates a range of qual methods (both online and face-to-face).
  • Manages the data merge and analysis of data, drawing on everyone’s insights to create a full research picture, then ensuring the scope is agreed and approved by the Project Lead.
  • Works closely with quant team on projects, conducting integrated analysis
  • Creates the debrief document, co-ordinating the different actions of team members, ensuring the correct base and source is referenced on all slides.
  • Writes the recommendations section of a debrief, ensuring the implications of the research findings on the clients’ issues/needs/etc. have been carefully thought through.
  • Presents the findings jointly or solely to the client at the debrief, answering questions and noting any action points for follow-up or amendments to the report.
  • Undertakes one-off internal projects which involve primary and/or secondary research and reports, or contributing to marketing think—pieces, writing blogs or other material promoting The Big Picture’s work.

Client:

  • Works closely in partnership with the client throughout, establishing themselves upfront as the main contact, taking care to manage their expectations and keep a good communication flow.
  • Part of the account team for a key client.
  • Develops strong relationships with existing clients and keeps in touch with historic clients.

People:

  • Delegates to, supports and guides junior colleagues, helping them to develop and build their roles.
  • While working mainly autonomously, will check with the Project Lead at key decision points on larger / more complex projects, and escalates difficult issues.
  • Manages internal project teams focusing on key aspects of the business such as marketing, social or new product development.
